Indiana State University

Conference Assistant

May - August 2019 • Terre Haute, IN

What I liked

I liked building a community with my fellow student staff members that all lived on campus.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to interact with conference attendees and summer residents.

Advice

I would advise people to make sure they are prepared to step out of their comfort zones. There’s a lot of interaction with supervisors and a lot of interaction with visiting guests of the university, so try to be as resourceful as possible.

Writing Consultant

August 2015 • Terre Haute, IN

What I liked

I love the opportunity to give back to the student population in not only helping them build upon the skills they already have, but letting them learn who they are and who they could be through expressing themselves in their writing. Plus, we are like a big family. The supportive environment working with coworkers who are also students or have recently graduated is really a relief. I genuinely enjoy coming into work.

What I wish was different

I wish the university would give us more funding so we could hire more tutors and administrators (or be willing to hire tutors on for more hours- most are limited at 20 or 28 hours/week)! In my time there we have always been short-staffed.

Advice

Take frequent breaks. Although we do around-the-clock drop ins instead of scheduling appointments, we are alloted a 5-10 minute (non-optional) break in between sessions. These are so necessary to clear one's head before the next appointment and to help keep from getting burnt out, which is easy to do when you're working with a vulnerable student population (those who are here because they've already admitted they need some kind of help) and one that may involve personal, emotional, or controversial subject matter.
