CARE is a global leader within a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty. We are known everywhere for our unshakeable commitment to the dignity of people. CARE operates in 95 countries reaching more than 65 million people through nearly 900 lifesaving projects.CARE cuts poverty off at its roots. We provide tools for sustainable change to the people most vulnerable to hunger, violence and disease.
In our programs all over the world, we work to prevent disasters and food crises through promoting environmental sustainability and empowering people economically so that they are better prepared for difficult times.
CARE was started during WWII. These early packages were U.S. Army surplus "10-in-1" food parcels intended to provide one meal for 10 soldiers during the planned invasion of Japan. We obtained them at the end of the war and began a service that let Americans send the packages to friends and families in Europe, where millions were in danger of starvation. Ten dollars bought a CARE Package and guaranteed that its addressee would receive it within four months.
