Progressive Insurance

Mobile Application Developer Intern

May - August 2021 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Everything! The company is more genuine than I could have ever imagined, especially considering their size. I absolutely loved the Mobile App department.

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was everything that I could of asked for and I felt that the pay way very appropriate. An option to start part-time between your fulltime offer and the internship might be nice for some, but in my case it was actually quite nice to have the time off.

Advice

Don't be afraid to express what you want or what will make you happier at work! With a company that is as open-minded as Progressive, it was very important to express what you were thinking because they DO listen. In my experience, I spoke up on what I was interested in doing during the internship and on what conditions I would be able to accept the return offer (location, start date, etc.). They listened to everything and always found ways to make sure you were taken care of!

Pricing Intern

May - August 2020 • Kent, OH

What I liked

I liked being able to apply things I had learned in my classes to real tasks in the insurance world. I also loved all of my coworkers, and my supervisors did a great job of training me and making sure I had all of the tools I needed to succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked in the office, but obviously that was not possible because of COVID. Progressive did a great job of shipping out laptops though!

Advice

My advice for future interns is don't be afraid to ask questions because everyone will be super helpful.

Application Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Great culture, meaningful challenges, modern technology. I worked with the Claims IT group. As an intern, I was committing real work to the project codebase after the first week.

What I wish was different

More exposure to other aspects of development within the company

Advice

Definitely worth it; the culture at Progressive is laid back yet professional, and everyone gets along. If you're on the fence about applying as a developer to an insurance company, DO IT! You're doing the same things with the same new technologies that developers at startups are, just in a larger context.

What I liked

It was a great work environment. People were very friendly and you could always ask questions. The hours are great, the pay is great, and they really try to make sure that you have a good time while you're there so you want to come back.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern program would have been more structured. There were a lot of loose ends that made a lot of things incredibly confusing.

Advice

If you're interested in pursuing strictly Actuarial work, this isn't the place to be.
