Guest Service Rep

September 2016 • Sayville, NY

What I liked

My favorite part of working at target is the strong sense of community within the organization. You develop strong relationships with Target's guest and are actively involved within the Sayville community.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to learn about more managerial positions such as a team leader or human resource specialist.

Advice

I advise that you engage with your fellow team members and leaders. Learn about each other on personal and professional level. Networking can be done everywhere and there's no one better to network with than people who are aware of your strong work ethic.

Cashier

July 2016 • Amherst, NY

What I liked

I love interacting with people and when you’re a cashier you have to talk to a lot of people which was cool for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve worked a little more.

Advice

I would say to treat others how you would want to be treated because I know when I go to the store I would want someone nice to greet me and cash me out, because sometimes something as simple as that can put someone in a good mood.

What I liked

I like the overall atmosphere of the retail store and the team.

What I wish was different

I honestly do not have a comment what I wish was different.

Advice

I advice anyone in the Fashion Merchandise & Design track to have retail experience for at least one year. It is very beneficial to your resume, the experience is great and you actually get to use some of the knowledge that you learned in merchandise and design classes.

General Merchandise Expert

April - October 2019 • Marquette, MI

What I liked

I liked how understanding everyone was, and I really appreciated my lead, Lindsey, for being supportive and friendly. Everyone was very helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish the job hadn’t caused as much stress as it did for me. It was really a fun place to work, but I felt very challenged to keep up most days. In the end, it just wasn’t the job for me.

Advice

Go in to the job knowing and understanding your expectations. You will be expected to work at a quick pace and you will have to learn a lot. If you enjoy a fast-paced job that keeps you moving throughout the day, it’ll be a good job for you. And one more thing—if a job doesn’t fulfill you, you aren’t doing yourself or your employer any favors by staying. Go find something that will be fulfilling. It’s okay to try a job and leave if it doesn't fit your needs.

What I liked

Honestly I don't really enjoy it anymore. It's just convenient for me. It used to be kind of fun, but now it's frustrating and monotonous.

What I wish was different

I wish they would stop changing procedures every other month. Just choose one way that you want us to stock shelves. Putting things out is so simple in concept and somehow corporate has made it a confusing nightmare and changes their mind on how best to do it all the time.

Advice

Working in retail sucks and working in the lowest paying position offered by a retail company is the worst of all. You get the worst of all experiences - bratty customers, low pay, management that doesn't know what they're doing because the turnaround rate is disgustingly high and an unfeeling corporation that doesn't actually care about any of that nonsense.

Cafe Server

June 2019 • East Greenbush, NY

What I liked

I love working with customers, especially little kids who come in and ask for popcorn. Making pizzas and pastas is easy, and for the most part my shifts go quickly because there is always something to do.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been trained in my own store, and that our facilities were cleaner. I try very hard to keep it clean, but it has been mismanaged since before I started and so there is only so much I can change.

Advice

When working in any job, but particularly a minimum wage job, always find something to do. A manager will notice when it is a slow and you are finding odd cleaning and/or organization jobs. This makes your shift feel faster, and it will help the facility as a whole to run smoother.

Cart Attendant

June 2014 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I really like the fact that I get to have more experience in customer service. I learns how to speak to others in a more professional level like greet customers. Also how to deal with problems at hand on my own without any assistance.

What I wish was different

I would have done an internship with my company if I had known they had one early on.

Advice

My advice to others about this experience is that the job will help you get out of your shell if you are shy and closed off like me. It allows me to change into a whole different person for the better in terms of talking to people, not being shy, or simply asking questions when I have to.
