Target

Retail Associate

June 2021 • Roseville, CA

What I liked

For my specific store location, excellent management. Ability to remain flexible from summer to fall when your schedule has to be changed to accommodate school.

What I wish was different

The pay and the staffing. Often schedule beyond my "maximum hours" because we don't have enough employees.

Advice

It's retail, have low expectations.

What I liked

Great team I was placed on that offered so much support. The company culture has a great work life balance and people do not seem overworked. The project I worked on was interesting and engaging.

What I wish was different

My project was not based on what the full-time role was that I was offered for.

Distribution Center Intern

June - July 2021 • Rialto, CA

What I liked

I liked working in the warehouse, and the culture was amazing. Most everyone was super willing to help me learn and feel like I was part of the team. I had a wonderful mentor who really helped me learn Target and develop my leadership style. They give a lot of recognition to their employees, and it is a fast pace environment. I left the experience pretty much ready to be an operations manager full time.

What I wish was different

I do wish the program had been longer, as it was only 8 weeks. Originally it was 10 but they shortened it, I believe because of COVID-19 complications. I also wish that the intern program was a little more structured about what I was supposed to be learning each week so I could better track my progress and see where I was supposed to be at. I also wish they were better at communicating to all parties that I would be working with that they would have an intern, because some people were unprepared.

Advice

Be accountable for your own progress. If you want to know something, ask. If you want to learn something, speak up and have someone show you. Each mentor can be different and have a different level of how motivated they are to help you learn. Take action to make your internship experience what you want it to be and don't only let it be doing what others tell you to do; you won't learn as much that way. It may be hard, but the whole purpose of being there is to learn.

Fulfillment Team Member

November 2020 • Langhorne, PA

What I liked

I like that I can come home for the holidays and know I have a job for those three weeks, and the summer.

What I wish was different

Management - When I was first hired I did not like the manager of my team, he was not understanding or supportive. For example, if you asked him for help in finding an item that you could not find anywhere, he would say "oh, you're just not looking hard enough". He also expected unachievable goals and since his expectations were so high and he did not communicate prioritization the team members and I were all stressed and confused. Luckily he is gone and we have a new Team Lead who gives clear and achievable goals and will actually help you find an item if you cannot find it on your own.

Advice

If you do not have a thick skin, this job will help you get one. Even though you are running around the store all day on a time crunch, customers will still ask for your help so try to give the best help you can first, or find another team member who can better assist the customer. invest in good running shoes or inserts for arch support, you will need it!! Don't be afraid to ask for help, someone in another department or on your team will know the answer or will point you to someone who knows the answer.

Guest Service Advocate

March 2020 • Willoughby, OH

What I liked

Target gives a reasonable amount of responsibility, and there is always something to be done. I enjoy my coworkers and speaking with guests, solving issues, and learning customer service.

What I wish was different

Management could have been better, constantly different opinions from different superiors. I would have liked some more variety as well; when working in the front, there are a lot of places I could be, but I would consistently only be in one location.

Advice

Prepare for a fast-paced environment, Target is a busy place, and many times you'll be doing 3 things at once. Just remember to enjoy yourself and not stress about the small stuff, do the best you can in stressful situations!

Merchandise Expert

July - October 2019 • Marquette, MI

What I liked

The team I worked with was a pleasant and enjoyable to work with.

What I wish was different

The work schedule was difficult to keep with a school schedule, but on its own or with another job it likely wouldn't be a problem. There was less training than I would have liked. I had to do lots of learning myself and had to ask plenty of questions in order to feel like I was as efficient as others.

Advice

Make sure you can wake up early and have a fluid schedule. Target is flexible in letting you build your schedule around classes, but if you are a new employee be prepared to have a very inconsistent schedule week to week.

Guest Advocate

August 2019 • Chesapeake, VA

What I liked

Target is a wonderful place to work while you are in college. They offer part-time positions at $15/hour and are willing to work with your schedule. During the school year, my Team Lead scheduled me for my desired 30-35 hours a week and would cut my hours to 20 a week during midterms or finals. I always appreciated how they genuinely cared about my life outside of Target and wanted me to succeed in my college classes. Along with flexible hours, Target also has a variety of positions you can learn. In my department (Front End), there are three positions: Cashier, Self Check-Out, or Guest Services. I am thankful Target offers a variety of areas to work in my department because it breaks up the monotony.

What I wish was different

Before the pandemic, Target was a pretty amazing place to work! Now, the only reason I stay at Target is because of my amazing team members and the pay. If you work at Target, be prepared to be extremely overworked in ANY department. During certain times of the year, corporate will severely cut your hours (working 40 hours a week to only 15 hours a week). Expect to be short-staffed every time you come in for a shift. Also, Target will do ANYTHING to keep the guest happy so expect to deal with entitled guests.

Executive Team Lead

July - August 2020 • Puyallup, WA

What I liked

My store had poor metrics for their fulfillment department so I took that as an opportunity to make an impact in my store. I analyzed the department, figured out where improvement could be made and implemented a new system. I set daily goals for picking/packing and assigned roles and saw a 10% improvement in our metrics.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could’ve been the full 10 weeks (thanks COVID).

Advice

Make yourself known. Find opportunities where you can make a difference. Get to know your team and find areas of success and struggle. If you have ideas for improvement, share them!! You never know what kind of difference you can make.
